Golden Visa renewals move fully online
Under the new system, Golden Visa holders, who are formally known as ARI applicants, must both apply for renewal and pay fees through the Renewal Portal.
The digital platform becomes the sole channel for these procedures. In-person appointments will no longer be used to submit renewal applications, reducing administrative delays and eliminating the need for unnecessary visits.
Previously scheduled appointments must still be attended if biometric data collection is required. This applies to cases where existing biometric records are invalid or outdated.
Biometric appointments remain in specific cases
Appointments will be used exclusively to collect biometric data. The renewal application itself will still be processed online.
If, after reviewing a submitted application, AIMA determines that new biometric data is needed, the authority will automatically schedule an appointment and notify the applicant of the date, time, and location.
Why were the changes introduced?
According to AIMA, the new system is intended to improve the overall experience for applicants while increasing administrative efficiency.
The key expected benefits include:
- faster processing of renewals;
- fewer in-person visits for applicants;
- improved data security and integrity;
- a more transparent and predictable procedure.
The agency states that the reform supports Portugal’s broader goal of strengthening its attractiveness to foreign investors while modernising public services.
About the Portugal Golden Visa programme
Portugal’s Golden Visa allows non-EU citizens to obtain a residence permit by investment, starting at €250,000. Among popular options are units of investment funds and supporting art and culture.
The permit is issued for 5 years, with the possibility of renewing it and later applying for permanent residence and citizenship. An investor may include their spouse, children under 26, and parents, provided they are financially dependent on the main applicant.
